Soil Health to Take Centre Stage at the 2025 Grazing Forum - 22-23 October

Healthy soils are the foundation of productive grazing and this October, the 2025 Grazing Forum will put that message front and centre. Hosted by Reef Catchments, the two-day event will bring together graziers, industry specialists and expert speakers to share practical ideas for elevating grazing enterprises across the region.

The forum will kick off with a Field Day at Yalboroo on Wednesday 22 October, followed by a full-day Conference at the Proserpine Showgrounds on Thursday 23 October. Attendees can look forward to an impressive line-up of presentations, from transitioning farmland to quality pasture, to optimising genetics and livestock performance. A diverse array of stallholders will also be on hand, showcasing innovative tools and services for the grazing industry.

Among the most anticipated activities will be the soil testing station, where graziers can bring along their own soil samples for free testing and tailored advice. TNQ Drought Hub Regional Soils Coordinator Dhiraj Gajera will be there across both days, ready to help producers better understand the critical role soil health plays in building resilience and boosting productivity.

Regional Soils Coordinator, Dhiraj Gajera
“I’m excited to meet graziers and hear the stories behind the soil they bring in,” Dhiraj said. “Every sample tells a story, and we’ll be there to help people understand what’s happening beneath the surface. Healthy soils don’t just grow better pastures, they support the long-term sustainability of grazing businesses, which is vital as we prepare for future climate challenges.”

The focus on soil reflects a growing awareness that drought means different things to different people. For some, it’s prolonged dry conditions; for others, it’s declining pasture quality or reduced carrying capacity. But no matter how it’s experienced, drought preparedness starts with healthy, resilient soils that can hold water, support diverse pastures and sustain livestock through tough times.

Key speakers will include Dr Wayne Vogler and agronomist Mandy Jeppsen, who will explore topics such as soil nutrition, managing invasive species and improving pasture productivity. Live demonstrations, including an autoweed paddock trial and a cattle presentation in the sales arena, will give producers practical, hands-on insights to take back to their properties.

By taking part in events like Reef Catchment’s Grazing Forum, the TNQ Drought Hub is helping producers access the latest science, tools and strategies to strengthen their land for the future.

“Soil health is where drought resilience begins,” Dhiraj said. “By investing in our soils today, we’re giving our grazing enterprises the best chance to thrive, no matter what the climate brings.”

Don’t miss this opportunity to connect, learn and prepare your grazing enterprise for a changing climate.
