TNQ Hub (Wet Tropics Node)

James Cook University (JCU) is the shopfront for the TNQ Hub and the Wet Tropics Node.

JCU is strongly positioned as the TNQ Hub lead with a physical presence within the Tropical North Queensland region and established relationships with drought-affected or drought-exposed stakeholders including major farming operations and intermediaries such as Indigenous councils.

The core site for the Hub, JCU’s Ideas Lab, along with other key facilities such as the Innovation Centre, Cairns Institute and Fletcherview Research Station, underpin the vision and activities of the TNQ Hub, making the translation and deployment of key knowledge brokering functions happen faster.

The Wet Tropics region extends from the Daintree forests to the sugarcane land delta of the Herbert River catchment in the south and west to the dry rangelands of the Upper Herbert. The great diversity in the rainfall, geology, soils, topography drainage and altitude has resulted in a complex varied spectrum of plants and animals.

JCU is an integral part of the region with major campuses in Cairns and Townsville and a firm presence across Tropical North Queensland including major research and teaching facilities in Mt Isa, Thursday Island and Mackay. JCU is the only regional university in Queensland to be ranked among the world’s top 400 universities by all three major global rankings. JCU is exceptionally well-placed to reach communities across the region and work innovatively with partners and participants to extend the resilience of the communities as they respond to the impacts of drought and other systemic risks.
