Congratulations to the recent graduates of our Governance Essentials course delivered by Get on Board Australia.
This is the third time the TNQ Drought Hub has run the course, designed to help community members feel more confident in taking on leadership roles and decision making.
Strong local committees play a vital role in community life, particularly in regional areas where volunteer-run organisations are often the backbone support and social connection during tough times. When drought or other pressures arise, these committees are the ones coordinating resources, supporting families, and keeping communities connected.
The course gives participants a working knowledge of the duties, responsibilities and requirements of management committees and management committee members. This knowledge helps individuals not only step into roles with confidence, but also ensures communities are better equipped to respond when pressures like drought intensify.
Participants agreed the course opened their eyes to just how important it is to fully understand committee responsibilities.
Bruce from Jericho reflected on the need to know what you are committing to before stepping into a committee role.
“It was just invaluable, and these kinds of things are essential to know.”
Annette also said the course had given her fresh confidence in taking on roles she had held before. “I’ve been treasurer and I’ve been secretary before and I think I would do a much more proficient and efficient job if I choose to take on a position again.
“It gave me a greater understanding of you do choose to position in a committee and what your roles and responsibilities and duties really are.”
Their reflections underline how strong governance knowledge doesn’t just benefit individual committee members but strengthens the whole community when challenges like drought arise.
