Knowledge Broker Karen George recently attended the Regions Rising Queensland conference in Cairns on 19 June, joining regional leaders, industry, and government representatives in conversations shaping the future of regional Queensland.

The event explored a broad range of topics, from housing and workforce challenges to regional GDP contributions and infrastructure investment. Discussions highlighted Queensland’s increasing multiculturalism, the growth of youth demographics, and the vital economic role regions play, with regional Australia having the potential to boost the nation’s GDP by billions.

Karen noted that while agriculture wasn’t a formal focus on the program, it was clear that agriculture, connectivity, and community resilience remain deeply linked to regional prosperity.

“For regions to be truly sustainable, agriculture and connectivity must remain part of these conversations,” Karen said. “These are the foundations that support communities to adapt to climate variability and prepare for future droughts.”

Conversations also explored innovation opportunities in biofuels, carbon capture, and sustainability within a primary industries blueprint, alongside recent government commitments for road upgrades, TAFE investment, and regional housing—all critical in supporting agriculture to remain viable and resilient, particularly during disasters and climate variability.

Karen reflected, “Attending events like Regions Rising ensures the Hub remains connected with those working on the ground, while keeping agriculture and resilience front and centre in shaping Queensland’s regional future.”
