Newsletter #33: January

TNQ Drought Hub

From the Director

Significant rains and flooding has become a recurring trend for our region over the last few years. This time it has mostly centred from Tully to Ayr, but at the time of writing other areas could also see increasing rains and flood risk over the coming days. Our thoughts are with all who have been affected, and we hope that all of our readers are safe. It will be a while before the extent of damage is known, and we hope that there is no major impact on agriculture across the region.

If you have been impacted I encourage you to visit the Queensland Government’s Disaster recovery support.

We also know that other areas across the region are desperate for rain. Staying well informed can help prepare for future events and help with management decisions. Some of the useful on-line resources include:

evokeAg25 is being held in Brisbane over the 18th – 19th of February. This is Australia’s premiere agtech event, with more than 2,000 attending last year. We are pleased to partner with Farmers2Founders, AgriFutures and LIFES to host Millennia of Ag-Innovation, an evokeAg sideline event in Cairns.

On the Monday 10th at Bush Tukka Park, you can engage with Indigenous food, craft and technology stands along with cutting edge agtech. Tuesday 11th is a bus tour of irrigation and aquaculture innovation which is certain to stimulate new ideas and conversation.

I invite you to attend this first of a kind event which will explore the intersection of traditional knowledge and cutting-edge agricultural technologies.

Last week, the Future Drought Fund (FDF) Investment Strategy was released. This strategy includes lessons from the first four years of the FDF and recent stakeholder feedback. There are five priority areas, and all align strongly with our goals:

  1. Partnering for local solutions
  2. Partnering for First Nations initiatives
  3. Building knowledge, skills and capability
  4. Innovating for transformation
  5. Measuring progress and knowledge sharing

Our annual survey is also still open, and we would love to hear from you. Please share your feedback with us.

Until next time, keep safe and well.

Director
