Newsletter #21: December 2023

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just over a week away. It’s been an incredible 12 months and I am very proud of the hub effort across our multiple member organisations.

Most importantly all of the hub team have continued to build relationships, foster networks, strengthen collaboration and support communities, landholders, townspeople, agribusinesses, technology companies, entrepreneurs and more across the Tropical North Queensland region to build resilience.

It has only been possible with the support of you, the land holders who have embraced our trials, attended workshops and forums, our NRM node partners, James Cook University and the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry.

This Newsletter provides some highlights from the past 12 months that we wanted to share.

A year, of course, is just part of a longer journey to enhance resilience for future droughts.

TNQ Drought Hub Director David Phelps

We are using real-world lessons from previous droughts across Queensland in combinationwith objective scientific information to guide the strategies, projects and activities into next year and beyond. We believe that combining lived and academic experience (or ‘paddock smarts’ and ‘book smarts’) lays a strong foundation for innovation, adaptation and resilience that’s needed for our region to prosper into the future.

It is crucial that we reach the right audience to share information, to seek feedback, to find new partnerships, ideas and solutions. To help us identify if we are achieving this, we ask that you please spare 2-3 minutes to complete our end-of-year survey.

The team will be enjoying a short break over the festive season and our office will be closed from Saturday 23 December 2023 until Monday 8 January 2024.

I wish you a merry and safe Christmas.

David Phelps,
