Landscape Rehydration Field Day and Contour Grading School

Join us for a comprehensive two-day event focused on sustainable land management in the Centralian rangelands. Hosted by the Northern Hub, Top End Conservation Management and Hewitt, this unique field day will provide you with valuable insights, practical demonstrations, and networking opportunities to enhance your understanding of sustainable rehydration land practices.

For Biosecurity purposes, all those attending must complete the Visitor Induction.

Dates: Wednesday, September 13th, 2023 – Thursday, September 14th, 2023

Locations: Narwietooma and Glen Helen Stations, Northern Territory

Program Highlights:

Day 1 – Wednesday, September 13th:

  • 09:00 AM: Traditional Owner Welcome to Country
  • 09:15 AM: Explore how practice change can lead to improved productivity, biodiversity, and landscape resilience
  • 09:45 AM: Insights from Willy Brown of Hewitt Cattle Company on their sustainable operations and organic certification
  • 10:00 AM: Learn about Landscape Rehydration methodologies with Lance Mudgway from the Mulloon Institute, including contour banking and leaky weirs
  • 11:00 AM: Tim Wiley from Tierra Australia explains catchment function analysis on properties
  • 12:00 PM: Lunch at Narwietooma Station
  • 12:30 Travel to rehydration demonstration site on Glen Helen Station
  • 01:00 PM: Observing rehydration demonstration sites at Glen Helen Station
  • 03:00 PM: Network over afternoon smoko
  • 03:15 PM: Return to Narwietooma
  • 03:45 PM: Observing demonstration sites. Presentation by Alison Kain/Chris Materne on post rehydration works sustainable cattle management

Evening:

  • 04:45 PM: Drive to Narwietooma Homestead.

Innovative technologies available for central Australian land managers

  • 05:00 PM Kerry Cosbie, CDU. CDU is the Service Manager for the North Australian Fire Information system and will explain how it can be used as an important land management tool
  • 05:30 PM: Networking time with drinks and nibbles at Narwietooma Station.
  • 07:00 PM: Enjoy “The Big Barbecue” at Narwietooma Station.

Day 2 – Thursday, September 14th:

Innovative technologies available for central Australian land managers

  • 08:00 AM: Stephen Scott, experienced soil conservation practitioner will teach grader operators how to construct contour banks for landscape rehydration works. Smoko will be provided during this session
  • 12:30 PM: Lunch at Glen Helen Station

Additional Information:

BIOSECURITY ALERT!

Hewitt take Biosecurity very seriously. There are multiple risks to our business, the welfare of our livestock and our industry as a whole. When entering a Hewitt site, you will be required to complete a Visitor Induction. This visitor induction contains a Biosecurity Declaration to be read and signed.

Some important points to note are:

  • All vehicles must be clean and free from soil and organic material (weed & seed declaration is preferred)
  • All people to have clean clothes and boots before entering site (preferably sanitised)
  • Any person who has travelled to an FMD-risk country in the last seven days will be denied access to site – please see attached information sheets on FMD.
  • Visitor Induction for traceability to be filled in prior to arrival or on arrival to site
