European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly, 14-19 April, Vienna, Austria

Dr. Ben Jarihani recently participated in the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly in Vienna, Austria, from 14-19 April 2024.

The EGU24 General Assembly was a remarkable event, welcoming 20,979 registered attendees, of which 18,388 traveled to Vienna from 116 countries, and 2,591 joined online from 109 countries. The conference featured 18,896 presentations across 1,044 sessions, with 57% of the abstracts contributed by Early Career Scientists.

Dr. Jarihani, a member of the EGU since 2011, has been actively participating and contributing to the scientific program of the Hydrological Science division.

At EGU24, he co-chaired a session on “Remote Sensing for Flood Dynamics Monitoring and Flood Mapping.” During this session, he presented and discussed initial results from the Tropical North Queensland Drought Resilience funded project on satellite monitoring of drought. Engaging with leading research institutes and universities, he received valuable feedback on adopting the latest algorithms and datasets for drought and flood monitoring and mapping in North Queensland.

This trip also fostered robust scientific collaborations on satellite technology applications in water resources management. Notably, collaborations with renowned organizations such as the USGS and Google Research Team are set to enhance the outcomes of current projects and facilitate scientific exchange and future drought-related initiatives of the hub.

Dr. Jarihani has also been working with the hub interpreting climate data to help identify future drought impacts for land managers.
