Cane toads take centre stage at ‘Eat the Invaders’ Screening

Cane toads were the invader of choice at the screening of ABC’s “Eat the Invaders” in Cairns this month.

After the screening, a panel of experts moderated by ABC’s Adam Stephen discussed the ‘tasty’ opportunities associated with unwanted pest.  Panel member included an ecologist, invasive species expert, and ethnobotanist as well as other field experts who deliberated how else cane toads can be used.

James Cook University’s and hub friend Dr Allan Dale said, “It was such a great atmosphere, and I really enjoyed the informal setting and broad Cairns audience. The event was a great opportunity to explore landscape scale biosecurity, biodiversity, culture and resilience issues through the lens of invasive species management. The event allowed us to look at both the challenges and opportunities ahead to solve these complex issues.”

The screening was presented by the North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance, in partnership with the TNQ Drought Hub, and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
